Juvenile trauma and the ACE study
There are now many experts who are convinced that stress is the cause of almost all of our physical complaints. And almost always the cause of that stress lies in our childhood.
Large-scale research was conducted in America. The ACE study (= Adverse Childhood Experience study, conducted among 15,000 people!) is now known worldwide. There appears to be a strong similarity between childhood trauma and both mental and physical symptoms, from serious diseases such as heart failure and cancer, to Alzheimer's and even death.
These are some shocking facts that came out of the study:
- 1 in 6 people experience 4 or more forms of childhood trauma
- People with ACEs are 4 to 12 times more likely to have health risks from alcohol or drug use and depression
- 5 of top 10 causes of death linked to childhood trauma
One man who, in my view, has an inspiring view of trauma is Gabor Maté. In this little video, where he draws the effects of trauma on all kinds of addictions, he aptly explains what he thinks trauma is.
In doing so, he gets to the heart of the matter in my view. That is that reconnection is needed, with yourself and with others. You need to reconnect within yourself with safety and joy (without all kinds of addictions).
Live The Connection provides the tools to make these connections yourself.
Enjoy this wonderful, loving and wise approach by Gabor Maté, of all the difficulties that can arise from trauma.
Below is the video I am talking about in this article.
